Every year from January to July, contests of singing birds are held in Thailand. This is very serious competition. Judges listen to the tone, melody and volume of each bird as they are hung on high poles 3 to 6 meters off the ground .
The winner stands to win a trophy and 10,000 baht – roughly equivalent to a little over US $300 and equal to a few month’s salaries for some in Thailand. The winner also stands to advance to some of the upper level competitions that cover a wider area of the country and also include contestants from neighboring Malaysia.
